To the Geography

Pirna lies at the upper beginning of the Elbtalweitung,

where the Wesenitz lead from the north and the Gottleuba from the south into the Elbe.
It lies at the Schollentektonischen interface of Erzgebirge and Western Sudeten,
which widens west to the rift valley of the Elbe basin.
Pirna is in the north by the West Lusatian hills and mountains with the Lusatia Fault
and surrounded in the south by the foothills of the Eastern Ore Mountains.
East of Pirna the Elbe crosses the Elbsandsteingebirge in a breakthrough valley,
that reaches into the urban area.
The city of Pirna was destroyed by the flood of the century in August 2002 a. June 2013 seriously affected.
